  • I’ve made some truly terrible French presses since I got this. Can I get some guidance on the settings please?

  • Set it to loosest then dial it tighter until it is in keeping with typical French press grind size?

  • I’ve been going quite course, chunky is definitely how’s I’d describe it. Tastes kind of woody.

    They have these at my local coffee shop and they taste great, but I normally have cappuccino. Milk seems to do a lot of heavy lifting for bad coffee

    Yes it does.

  • If it's 'woody' then I'd grind finer to bump up extraction until it isn't.

  • Coffee Outside™️ types what are your setups? We normally just take a flask/chilli bottle of French press with us, but I want to up our game.

  • It'll be the beans as most people have said but you can use this coffee compass to adjust the brew to get the best out of it.

  • I like a small stove and Moka pot personally. That's what I take on my trips and outside coffee rides.

  • +1 for Moka pot and gas stove. Especially as it’s often the only thing I have warm. If I’m going to be cooking and have a pan for heating water, I’d be tempted by taking an aeropress as the Moka is heavy for a single function.

    Always thought the jetboil French press looked good, but might be messy/faffy in practice.

  • GSI Java Drip, Rivers Micro Dripper, S2S collapsible cone, One of those flatpack 3 sided ones from square mile that i can't recall its name, then various stove options using either meths or gas.

    Sometimes a flask of a home brew is the simplest option though.

  • Aluminium canteen cup, hexamine stove and a 1.5g sachet of coffee instant type II. Musical spoon noise when stirring. Nice.

  • My wife also uses it and she doesn’t have the patience for a manual grinder

  • What’s the minimum viable manual grinder which is good enough for filter/french press but can be left in the office without stressing if it gets pinched/fucked if someone else uses it? Only for 1/2 brews a day.

    @Jonny69 that’s not helpful, as someone that took a hand grinder on rod runs in the 2000’s instant isn’t an option.

  • Gas stove, aeropress and plastic hario grinder if I've got the space. Longer trips it's stove and the fanciest instant I can find.

    though there’s loads of bigger fancy looking wooden handle ones out there now.

  • KINGrinder p0/1/2 priced at £22/33/44 IIRC.

    Definitely good enough, although small capacity if you’re doing a big cafetière (would need to fill and grind 2-3 times).

    Never seem in stock at a sensible price when I look on bezos world. I guess I could alix it, but equally morally dubious.

    I usually dose 45g in my caffetierre but maybe that can be a home/weekend one, and I can stop drinking a litre of coffee on top of home espressos….

  • They’re available again for not stupid money. I checked recently. I picked up a p0 for someone who needed a grinder and was impressed. If you’re drinking that much coffee, the cost of the grinder vs the cost of the coffee makes me think that spending more would make sense tbh.

    But if you want one to not care about the p series seem ideal tbh.

  • Went finer with the Hario grinder. Definitely better, but will go finer for tomorrow as there’s still a hint of woodiness

  • I have a KINgrinder p0 for leaving in the office. Adjusting the grind setting is a bit of a faff but otherwise a great, cheap grinder. Ordered direct from AliX with no issues.
