Slip Sliding Away...

  • Friday night, heading East on Tooley Street, just short of Tower Bridge. I go to take the left slip road, (Buses and cycles only) and before I know it there I am sliding down the road on my butt. I like to think my bike handling is pretty good so it's either the Kenda tyres or the diesel residue from the busses...though I think a combination. I suggest a little caution if you are rockin' through there. Anyone else got any potential accident blackspots?

  • Pretty much the same as being on a motor bike; anything where buses HGV etc have to start/stop sharply. And Seriously watch your selves on any sudden increases in gradient/ sharp bends/ Roundabouts.

Kinda everywhere really. Raised Ironworks tend to try to kill me...

  • ha! round the corner, theres a cycle path which passes under a bridge...i found myself lying on my back in the middle of the road.

THIS IS NOT A PHOTO OF THE AREA.it was due to those weird grippy things that i fell off...it straighted my wheels in the groves but it was slippery due to the rain.

poor aidan :( , did your sister kiss it better? :P

  • Dale, you are a very wrong man.

  • ha!

  • cunt

  • Also, any of the black tiles in Canary Wharf in the wet, instant slippage.

  • these cnuts get me on a wet day:

  • Christ, yes.

I first came across those on the Dragon Ride 2 years ago, I had no idea how to handle them, but seeing everyone else in front just boom over at 30+mph told me all I needed to know. Still pretty hairy though, and not much fun going uphill over them either!

last thursday night, cycling home about 10.30 at night, probably slightly slower than usual but definitely not faster (yeah, i'd had a drink or two but nothing excessive, and i was going slower so i didn't leave my girlfriend behind) when i took a left hand turn and the back wheel just went. result? smashed - i mean smashed - my brand new glasses, and got a nasty cut just above my left eye below the eyebrow. bloke out walking his dog scooped me out of the road and said, "blimey! you're the second person to do that in 5 minutes. you need to go to hospital mate, that cut looks really big." i brushed it off with a "no, it's alright, i'm a doctor, i'll just go home and wash it out first" but then saw it was a massive cut so after consulting another doctor friend, ended up in casualty. luckily, all seen and done within 2.5 hours, but i did end up with 4 stitches (one deep and three superficial). aside from that, knee badly bruised and shoulder and cheek also grazed, all on the left, plus a bruise on my right hand, but otherwise ok. i blame it also on a slick of car or bus oils loosened from the road following the rain earlier that day.

anyway, was back on bike today and loving it :-)

  • This morning I was riding up Holland Park Ave (why is it always this road?) and heard a bang. Turned around to see motorbike/scooter and rider scattered all over the road. Didn't appear to be any car involved and by the time I was at the top of the hill dude was on footpath with others around. Did anyone else see this?

It hasn't rained for a while and then when it does all the oils/road grime mix with the water to make the surface really slick. Take it easy out there!!!

  • Glad to hear you're back on the horse doca.

Yep it has been really slippery lately. Flet myself slip a few times going slowly round corners but lady luck was on my side and I regained grip.

  • sorry to hear about you noggin d0cA...and your glasses!

  • Mate washed out on a slowish right hand turn on Saturday lunchtime - we'd been discussing how greasy the roads seemed.

Also nearly come a cropper on those ridged pedestrian things aidan mentioned (near Tower Bridge/Cable St) a few years back. Only slightly damp, low speed, front wheel nearly went. They look completely innocuous - must be something to do with the physics involved or something...

  • I got some rear wheel slip action on the Willesden RR on Sunday with the Spesh.
I was going to blame the Spesh tyres but the roads are FSCKING greasy at the moment and I was moving at a fair clip.

  • Had to detour via Canary Wharf this morning and thought I'd follow the Thames path back into town alongside the Thames instead of the cycle path or main roads. The mile of cobbles around Wapping allowed me to regret this choice of route at leisure. I was all over the place on 23c.
