  • Just installed my lovely new CK headset to a pair of cannondale carbon slice ultra forks but becasue of the dish shaped base plate, after seating it, i have at least 3mm gap?! See pic.....

Why why WHY? Do i need to buy a new base plate? Anyone else had this problem?

    Ta!

  • the crown race could be the wrong way round.

what is a "base plate" ?

  • No i don't think it is, i think it can only go one way round.... this is it....

  • Its what the americans call it :)

what we call the head race (is that right? or is called a crown?)

  • the head race/base plate should sit into the bottom cup, flush.
    something is wrong.
is the bottom bearing up the right way?

  • crown race. we (americans) call it that too. must be a silly westcoast thing.

  • also, that doesn't look like the race is sitting all the way down on the forks?

  • is that the right forks for the frame? initially I thought you had put it on upside down but looking closely you can tell its not. Could it be that these forks are mean for a hidden/integrated headset?

  • i've had some of those that are flat and some like you've shown. if the old one compatible, if so, use that!

  • CK call them base plate, others (all?) call them crown race.

Looking at your pic it seems like the base plate is flush with the fork. Think you should take out the bottom bearing, see if it's up side down like 31t®um says.

  • i t looks like you need a hidden/integrated headset.

  • not sure about that, because the headset cups would be bigger on an intergrated headset, because the bearings sit in the head tube,(the king would then be too small) and the crown race does look like it is properly sitted on the fork.

  • u need to change the base plate
it looks to me the forks come with a base plate for integrated headset

  • ok so it sounds like i've bought a fork which was supposed to sit inside an intergrated headset.... arsebiscuits!

The fork came second hand off the bay, it does now look oversized, oh well, looks like i'm in the market for a new carbon fork.... anyone?

  • u seem to bought everything wrong lol
a photo of the base plate might help!

  • Does it matter that much? I don't think it changes how the headset/forks perform as the int. headsets just have more 'covering' material at the bottom, nothing that actually bears weight, touches bearings, etc.

... tell me about it, i've lost the plot I think ;)

Well, not really, it works absolutely fine and i've ridden it round the block, it's just that i've spent 500gns on this so far and wanted it to be purrfik, you know, as my sunday best :)

  • sell the king and buy a proper headset

  • Is it a 1" or 1 1/8" headset. The forks look like they should be for an integrated headset of 1 1/8". If you have a 1" headset then the forks are wrong...should sit flush

  • MrSmith sell the king and buy a proper headset

    How very dare you!

  • Toby,
    Alright mate,
It will work it will just look crap. A mate ran an intergrated fork on a normal bike for a while without any problems.
That'll teach you to buy anything made by crack'n'fail in the future...

  • Hi Tom, velly funny! Yeah like i said, it works fine but you're right, it looks pants! Did you make it down to the rollapaluza the other night by the way?

Pistanator Is it a 1" or 1 1/8" headset. The forks look like they should be for an integrated headset of 1 1/8". If you have a 1" headset then the forks are wrong...should sit flush

Hi Graham, nah it's a 1 1/8 frame and headset, it's defo the forks that are wrong.... that will teach me for buying things cheap on the bay!!
