don't go fixed unless your confident, if its really busy on your commute being fixed won't help you to be safe and if your single speed, how many brakes do you have?
-
• #4
in what way is fixed more dangerous then single speed?
-

The main reason I didn't get on with fixed is I have a dodgy knee and have to be pretty careful with what I do, it starting hurting with fixed so for now I am just single speeding.
Don't worry I have two brakes, I do not like face skids.
I think fixed probably is more dangerous, simply because there are more things to think about / could go wrong. However, the majority of people who ride them are pretty skilled riders and I suspect are less likely to get into trouble.

your knees will hurt when you first start riding fixed...its stops.i maybe wrong but i would have though the continuous motion of a fixed gear would be better for your knees in comparison to a broken motion of a free wheel.
after riding fixed for a few months the pedaling becomes like breathing...you don't think about it.
...it sounds to me like you're scared!ha! :) -

I may well try again. I have another bike I am building up too so may make this the fixed one. Remember I am only used to little diddy Brompton wheels!

Commuted in ss today after a week off work when I was riding fixed every day. First mile or two was really unnerving; I felt alot less safe and more out of control relying on the brakes rather than the other way around which was unexpected. I think I need an ENO hub ;)

I have just ridden the Fuji I bought from these very forums the 6 or so miles into central London. It was very exciting, and certainly hurt my knees less than the Brompton I used before. I am not riding fixed as I couldn't get on with it particularly, however I must have shaved 10 minutes off my previous commute! Nice!
