It looks like you need a pin spanner (park tools green handle sugar-tong lookalikes) and lockring spanner to get the non-drive side off. Remove the lockring and use the pin spanner to get the non-drive side cup out. Then all the bearings and the axle will fall on the floor and roll under the wardrobe. Then you can take the drive-side cup off with a big spanner or a proper BB spanner.
The threading is reversed on the drive side. (I think)

This all sounds very useful, thanks. Will post my results after I get some more tools. Thanks!

Firstly remember that each cup is threaded opposite to the other one, so one turns clockwise to tighten, the other counterclockwise to tighten - so one is reverse threaded.
To loosen, both cups turn the same way as the front wheel would turn when going forward, so that's clockwise for the drive side and counterclockwise for the non-drive side.
To get the lock ring off - put a screwdriver or some other pointed bit of metal into one of the notches and tap (or pound!) with a hammer until loose.
You can do the same with cup under the lockring - put a pointed metal thing (small alan key, screwdriver, pen etc) into one of the holes (it's not clear on your picture ?) and again tap it with a hammer to loosen.
The other side. . .
Ideally a BB spanner will get this off, or failing than a really big spanner, or failing that bash a little notch into the far right hand side of one of the flats with a screwdriver and hammer and use this to tap it off.
Like I pointed out above the biggest mistake people (me!) tend to make with the drive side cup is to attempt to loosen this by turing it in the wrong direction - as it is reverse threaded. To loosen turn clockwise.

if its well stuck you might want to tap it, or give it a lt of plusgas before you go at trying to remove it, will save you some arm pains.

I am now getting on quite well at building my single speed, however have got stuck at removing the BB. Any idea how I can get this off? It sounds like half a beach is in it and I want to replace it with a sealed BB.
and on the other side
