  • Although, how deep is the xr22? That’s just a random pic of an offset rim I found on the web

  • The clue is in the name...

  • Ye it's 22mm deep. I know you can get offset rims and offset drillings.

The blurb on spa and cycle clinic say offset spoke holes and drillings respectively so I am guessing its just the drilling for these rims. Perhaps that won't look so off on a fixed rear?

  • This is the offset XR22

  • I wouldn’t use an offset rim on a symmetrical hub.

Are there other rims in stock? A 22 on the front and 26 on the back (for instance).

  • Perhaps that won't look so off on a fixed rear?

It will look fine if you use the same hub front and rear, which is what I'd do if I was going to build a pair of wheels which were fixed rear and dick break front.

  • I couldn't find XR22 in the colour/symetricallity/drillings I wanted so went with Halo Evaura instead. They are supposedly the same rim just branded up.

The branding on the silver ones isn't too in your face, black ones might be a bit more obvious.

  • @miro_o Hmm not sure I could deal with having different rim depths front and rear, think it would bother me more than the asymmetrical/symmetrical. Maybe I'll just go XR26 front and rear. 4mm more aero too ;)

@gbj_tester Yes I am intending to use same hubs and I am inclined to trust you if you say it will look fine.

I don't feel any closer to a decision however.

  • I don't feel any closer to a decision

Just use XR31T both ends, it's always the right answer🙂

  • A weird hang-up that. Do you feel the same about different F/R spoke counts?

A 22m rim is probably ideal for a set of climbing or ‘mountain’ wheels or something ... otherwise you might as well drop the spoke count and use a deeper, stiffer rim.

  • Hmm maybe it is. I guess unless it’s actually for the aero benefits then I’d rather have same depth front and rear.

I was planning on using surly ultra new hubs because there isn’t a huge choice of matching hubs that come in fixed 120mm rear and front disc (that don’t cost a million pounds) and AFAIK the lowest they come in is 32h. I want the wheels to be pretty solid as they’re going to be doing 120+ miles a week across London and not too concerned about weight because it’s fixed.

    HB-M475 or HB-M525

  • HB-M475 or HB-M525

With a Velosolo Disc Cog, axle and spacer kit.

If availability of the xt26 is better, that’ll be a stronger wheel for only a few grams more.

  • But if weight isn't an issue then the obvious answer is, cue drum roll, the XR31. Which is always the correct answer.

  • Yep. A hugely overbuild front wheel at this stage though (for most people).

I know nothing about these but they look nice and cost very little. Not sure if they have symmetrical drilling though. They may be worth considering @oheyitsdrew

  • Velosolo Disc Cog, axle and spacer kit

    Obvs.

  • Ah I hadn’t thought of that solution but I actually just won a surly ultra new 120mm rear on eBay and I wanted polished silver anyway so I guess that’s the route I will take.

@miro_o probably didn’t need something else throwing in to consider but they do look good on paper and I would probably prefer something less deep so I will look into them, cheers.

  • if you're going to use 28+ tires:
    Kinlin TL-23 Disc Rim

  • Anyone close to putney that can respoke and true my wheel? I have the spare spoke thanks to @Netakure

    Happy to pay.

  • I have a 28h black Xr22 non offset if you want one.

  • Got some 32h Miche track hubs I picked up on a Christmas day sale a year or so ago. Time to build them up. I'm looking at silver deep v rims such as aerorage, velocity or arayas style. Any thoughts, opinions , alternatives or expeiences?

  • I'm looking at silver deep v rims such as...

    ...Kinlin XR31T 🙂

  • New bestest rim?:

I can't actually find it for sale anywhere... https://kinlin.com.tw/rd-3ft/

Anyone seen it or similar under a different brand name?

  • New bestest rim?

For bigger tyres, maybe. A lot of legacy road bikes won't take anything bigger than a 25.
