Bought some SKS Chromoplastic Road Mudguard Set 700x20-28 Narrow Black - 35mm Width from wiggle; first impressions very solid compared to the race blades i'd used and broken previously.
A couple of snags: I offered the front guards up to the forks and realised I don't have eyelets on the forks... doh! cable tied for now (surprisingly solid) but p clips on order. They need a bit of modification for a better fit as a bit too much/ uneven clearance in places and I hadn't factored in the additional toe overlap once fitted and have nearly taken a couple of tumbles waiting at lights. Not sure how I'm going to get the rear wheel off (brute force probably) if I puncture with horizontal drops: worry about that when it happens.
About your last comment: get a pair of the SKS quick release clips 'SecuClips' I think they're called. Supplied for the front guard, in the case of track ends they work well on the back. It's been discussed up-thread. I find it's a pretty good solution.

Thanks skully, I'll check them out.
Verdict on the sks guards after some use in the wet and a bit of modification: my dry @rse and feet, and still fairly clean bike are much pleased!

Chromoplastic P65. The very wide ones. You'll need a frame and forks with lots of room. Black. Front a tiny bit deformed (the U shape flattens a bit) possibly from being bent in the post, behind the fork crown, would not be a problem once mounted. Otherwise perfect, hardly used from the looks of it. Front has a short mudflap. Pretty much all fixings included from what I can see, including stays and secu clips.
They retail for £30. As I paid £12 for two pairs posted, I'm happy with £6. The forum will provide.

I have this memory that people rate the steel GB mudguards over the alu honjo/VO ones.
Is that correct, and is there any particular reason? Is it just a toughness thing?
Cheers.

Toughness and weight.

thoughts on these compared to GB? http://www.kinokocycles.com/accessories/mudguards/hammered-alloy-fenders-1.html
The product details on the kinoko website are always annoyingly sketchy, weight would be nice. The GB stainless are on sale at PX so its between these two.

• #1010
Difference is alloy not steel.
Choice up to you really, both will perform the task you want it to do, only addition that's worth doing is adding mudflap.
-
• #1011
Ed, i'm happy to be proven wrong, but I don't believe that all else being equal the GBs are lighter than Honjos. I've owned both but don't have a scale.
Have you weighed them? -
• #1012
I did, trying to find the photo (650b 60mm).
From memory it's 450g.
I didn't says the GB are lighter than the Honjo, just is that it's light.

Found it! christ that took forever, including the stay;

Salmon Profil;
538g.
PDW Full Metal Fenders is 545g.
The biggest difference is the stay, the GB have alu stay whether the Salmon/PDW/SKS use steel.

i used these with 2" big apples and there was plenty of room. as skully said they were a touch wide for my forks so they were squashed a little but not enough to worry about.

Toughness and weight.
So they're tougher and heavier.
I wouldn't sell the extra weight as a benefit. -
• #1017
450g is hardly heavy thought.
I got the 60mm 650b Honjo mudguard, give me five minutes to weight it.
-
• #1018
Honjo 650B 60mm Fluted mudguard with stay and mount - 471g.
it's slightly wider and longer (both front and back) than my GB.

Here's a discussion about fenders, I'll include a quote from Mr Heine.
*"When we tested fenders for Bicycle Quarterly (Vol. 2, No. 1), we found
for complete sets with stays and hardware:- Honjo aluminum H40, 444 g.
- Berthoud stainless 700C: 598 g
- SKS narrow: 510 g
- Berthoud carbon: 248 g
- Salmon aluminum: 686 g
I prefer the Honjo aluminum fenders, as they are easy to shape for a
perfect fit. The Berthoud stainless fenders apparently have a tendency
to crack over time.Jan Heine

Toolstation 40455 £6.62
Thats the ones!
I just bought some of these, they are rubbish and don't cut the stays. Avoid.

I'm sorry if this has been covered before, but mu search fu seemed weak.
If I was to buy hardware/stays for a set of homemade full length mudguards, what should I buy? I like stylish and sturdy, but I also like something that can be fitted to to a racing bike with no mounts.

If anyone is interested I have weighed the TFG hammered mudguards in the spirit of mr scoble and they come in at 440g with stays but not counting the bolts and other hardware.
I think I may have seriously over my ability to mount them. I don't really want to take them all the way back to Kinoko to get them fitted, what shop in east london is recommended to do a good job at fitting them and how much should it cost?

what you worried about? x -

After some mudguards for a Dawes Galaxy with 27" x 1 1/4" wheels.
SKS Chromoplastic are the only ones I can find that are specifically listed (by SJS) as being suitable for 27" wheels. However, other listings only refer to them as fitting 700c wheels: am I right in thinking that any 700c mudguard will also fit 27" wheels?
Secondly if my maths is right, then 1 1/4" is more or less equivalent to 32mm, so that is the clearance I need: correct?
Finally, any other recommendations? Mid-range and ideally in white.

It really did. Well, eone did.
Turns out the TWO complete pairs of mudguards 26" are both in almost immaculate condition, and virtually given to me. Rep to eone for generosity!
Turns out the Gilles Berthouds 26" fit well in the clearances on my kid's bike, the SKS are a bit wide.
So if anyone needs really wide guards for 26", gimme a shout. They're minty.
