  • made some changes again. new saddle, bigger tyros, new pedals, different stem and riser, new and quieter chain and a front brake for freedom's sake (I can't financially afford another summer without one)...

straps are ordered and I desperatly need new cranks (Black 75s or omniums) and the front wheel will change from radial to 3x. but all in due time...

What happen to the current one?

  • What happen to the current one?

it is still on there, but it looks shit. especially with those pedals...

  • Ah, go for omniums, no point in going for 75.

  • Ah, go for omniums, no point in going for 75.

    why's that?

  • External beat square taper.

  • External beat square taper.

please elaborate! I really do care to know...

  • What is there to explain? stiffer, lighter, cheaper, easier. etc. (last two in reference to bottom bracket).

  • Yup, so clearly evidenced by the fact that barely any of the track professionals, the people who would genuinely notice the flex, have swapped away from the s75's.

  • Is should say I have Omnium's on most of my bikes, for the convenience of fit and removal, not for any perceived stiffness gain. If you can feel flex while riding s75's you need to check your pedalling style or installation technique as that spongy feeling is probably your joints flexing out of line.

  • External are still typically lighter with cheaper and easier BB approach. None of those 3 things would matter to a track professional but this is for road use by non professionals isn't it (where stiffness wouldn't matter anyway)?

    This, thanks.

    And this is an opinion.

  • A correct one at that, long term the external is better.

Just because they used it in track does not automatically mean they're idea.

  • I agree, stiffness doesn't matter but some people are anal enough to try and feel the difference.

  • well Ed you listed it as the first reason for chosing Omniums over Suginos, perpetuating the myth further...

I find that most of the differences are marginal at best and any benefits are offset by other problems.

  • I did since it is technically stiffer.

  • But not in any meaningful way...

  • Which would suggest all the subsequent reasons were even less relevant.

  • I do ride much, but I am certainly no pro...

All I want is a black crankset, since these silver ones just don't work. which one it will be in the ends depends on availability and price. but since I need to also change other stuff on the bike, this won't hapen tomorrow. for now this thing is rolling and I really like the way it rides.

  • if you swap the cranks to sugino you dont practically need to touch the bottom bracket.
for omniums you will need to face the bb shell, get a propetiary tool, and go through the tittle-tattle of deciding between original omnium bb, which is apparently shit, and some 120quid options out there.
s75's will fit the bill nicely:)

  • but don't they have different "square tapers"? so that a sugino would not fit properly on the camp BB? I thin I remember having that problem before, so I would change that as well...

but changing the BB is not that much of a problem, and with the proper tools a matter of minutes..

  • no. s75=iso taper=campagnolo

get some omnomnoms because they look badass. now THEREs a convincing arguement.

  • ^ at last someone with a genuine argument, for aesthetics sake.

  • Despite the Omnium logo being designed by a schoolboy on work experience, the cranks do suit chunky framed bikes better.
