  • Out of interest does this give you data about average speed, distance, etc like an old-school cateye computer?

Forgot to mention I like that stuff as well.

    Otherwise good shout.

  • Sounds like you need more gps!
Which of those Garmins (if any) is best suited to my needs?

Or should I get all of the above... y'know, just to be sure? I wouldn't want to get lost now.

  • I also have an 800, had an 810 have a 1000, have one of their car Garmins and had a Vista HCx.

Edge units are best for cycling. Bigger the better for me because I tend to do lots of rerouting on-screen. Phone can be a backup normally. etrex only comes out for races.

  • OSMAND can record gpx with a plugin, for speed, distance etc.
You can then upload the gpx to places like strava etc or do your own analysis using something like training centre, Golden Cheetah etc

  • I bought a Garmin 530 purely for navigation. I don't even like to look at how many miles I have left or god forbid my speed. Screen stays on the map with TBT navigation permanently.

I like it. Got really tired of the phone and powerbank setup. Plus it looks hideous.

  • Cheers : )

When you say rerouting on-screen, does that mean you can change your destination as the day progresses? This is more or less the dream for me when I'm touring (I use paper maps like a luddite).

Btw, are you the guy that does the transcontinental race every year? I think Scherrit was telling me about you the other week. Either that or you have shares in Garmin.

  • I agree about phone and powerbank not being the most elegant solution. I guess that's really the crux of why I'd prefer a dedicated device.

Presuming with the 530 you upload the route before you leave and then just follow it TBT?
Is there much scope to change the plan halfway through the day... like randomly deciding to head somewhere completely different instead, or making a detour to check things out en route? (sorry if these are stupid questions btw!)

there is but on device routing on garmin devices is abyssmal and that is being kind.

Detours cannot be done with any ease. You just have to set a new destination, using one of the device options, such as address, map point, POI (point of interest)

  • I reckon I've a spare one somewhere

I use Komoot for routes, and you can install a Komoot 'app' on your Garmin 530 device which automatically syncs your Komoot routes when you turn on wifi. Quiet convenient.

I'm would expect there is, though I don't really have experience with that. Once you go off route, your Garmin will protest, and want to navigate you back to the route. You can turn this off, luckily.

  • I hate Garmin, but they're still the best thing available for my needs. Not every year, but I've done all the best ones and if Scherrit was talking about some nutter it was probably me - I'm pretty sure I out-nutter most of his clients ;)
