  • Small (49cm) turquoise gazelle champion mondial stolen outside Rushmore Primary school in E5. The frame was quite beaten up and I suspect someone probably cut through it and destroyed it to get the parts as the lock was where it had been left undamaged, so not hopeful it'll be recovered, but would be happy to see any of it turn up. Much sentimental value :(

  • That's shit. I think your suspicion as to the method of theft is probably correct, sadly. :(

  • Saw this little cluster locked at the entrance to Cockpit Yard WC1 yesterday evening. Looked weird, could be innocent.

  • Please look out for friends stolen Trek and Liv Hybrid.

Stolen from a communal lock-up* near Westferry. Sometime between Thursday night and Friday midday.

*In before Oliver, yes they are well known to be vulnerable to theft but sometimes there’s no other choice if you’re in a small flat.

  • Like I'd blame the victims. It's planning rules that need changing. Landlords need to improve security and put in place good management régimes for existing facilities.

  • We're the bikes insured?

The security door got kicked in and the lock was cut by what I can deduce with a hand held angle grinder hence I do concur with +Oliver Schick

You're paying service charge so why don't demand for better service?

  • Just been mugged for me old-man bike which I absolutely loved. If anyone spots it please let me know.54366532726789

  • Crap news, Matt. Glad you're OK. And it's a completely bizarre incident, of course. If it cheers you up, they clearly mistook you for a pro racer on a £10k bike. Hope you get one that feels like an adequate replacement after a while, but I have old-bike-attachment-syndrome bad, too, so I can imagine how it feels.

It’s real; see The Third Policeman:

The gross and net result of it is that people who spent most of their natural lives riding iron bicycles over the rocky roadsteads of this parish get their personalities mixed up with the personalities of their bicycle as a result of the interchanging of the atoms of each of them and you would be surprised at the number of people in these parts who are nearly half people and half bicycles… when a man lets things go so far that he is more than half a bicycle, you will not see him so much because he spends a lot of his time leaning with one elbow on walls or standing propped by one foot at kerbstones.

Sorry to hear about another bike theft; even worse when it was a mugging.

  • I'm OK. Just miss that bike - we had a lot of adventures together. I don't think I was targeted for profit, I just think I rode past the wrong group of ne'er-do-wells at the wrong moment.

  • Fucking hell, glad you are unscathed but be kind to yourself for the next few days too, these things can creep up on you. We were walking near there probably around the time (Bromley Rd shops) but didn't see anything notable.

  • Sorry to hear that! Really scary situation. Hope you are ok!!!

  • Mrs Coffeeholics bike got stolen on Friday in central London. She's pretty upset, loved the bike and not sure we can find the same one again. Anyhow, the strange thing was that she found the lock undamaged, unopened still hanging on the lamp post. The only explanation I can come up with is that they must have cut the frame. There was also another bike across the street stolen the same way. Has anyone heard of people cutting frames to steal the bike?

Bike looks exactly like I the picture except for the rear tire being a brand-new yellow sidewall X one speed.

  • There was another one 6 days ago on here with an undamaged lock. Looks like they are being stolen for parts.

  • In this case, and especially considering there was another one stolen in the same street in a seemingly similar way, it's unlikely that they will have cut the frame (unlike the bike above), as the frame is very sellable. If the other lock of the other bike across the street was the same type, they may have had a kind of skeleton key? I have no idea how this works, but I seem to remember that there was a period when a lock manufacturer's keys had been worked out and could be opened with such a secondary key. This was a long time ago and the problem was fixed, I think. Can anyone remember details or am I making this up?

Either way, sorry for her loss.

  • Friend had the handlebars stolen off his bike by Dalston Kingsland last night. Weird one considering it's not a fancy bike, neither the levers nor the bars themselves would really be worth much of anything ...

  • That is a possibility, we are waiting for CCTV to be obtained, hopefully that will show something. The lock on the other side of the road was an ABUS as well but a different model.

I just wonder that the thief would lock the lock back up after opening it.. we might never find out

  • Is is possible she put the lock around an unboltable part? Years ago I had a bike nicked after locking it around the stem when I was in a hurry.

  • Not entirely impossible ;) but no she's very certain it was locked through the frame as it was difficult to get it up on the thinner part of the lamp post

  • Yes it was the case with this bike cutting through the frame to sell parts on but luckily for me they stopped Quarter off the way through. Shimano ultegra groupset are worth a bit.

  • Often wondered why cutting frames wasn't more of a thing on the high end stuff.

  • I found an abandoned bike in Stratford, London over a week ago and have been trying to find the owner. The police were basically useless and though there's a case id, they aren't planning on doing anymore.
It's a long shot but if you lost/had stolen a Scott bike in the last few weeks, send me a message with pics/description.
