You needed a couple more hills
There's a minimum climb rate for each distance.
Could you put and back the first 100km of hat route? Probably be worth 3 points

  • Although you should get some for the part portion actually.

    Has it been verified?

I'd wager that you will be good for points.

  • Sorry that doesn't make things any clearer.

"So for example, events that do 1,875m - 2,124m of climbing are worth 2 AAA points but events that do 2,125m - 2,374m of climbing are worth 2.25 AAA points"

  • To be clear, I am not throwing my toys out of the recumbent, I genuinely don't understand the maths. And I am only grateful to the DIY organiser

  • As I understand/understood it to be.

Think of it like 20- 29yrs 364 days you are 20something. 30-39 365 days you are a thirty something.

They've put those thresholds to neatly divide the points. Imagine a scoring system where every metre gained 0.001 of a point. I don't think that's feasible because 10 devices/maps/whatevers would give 10 readings.
This 250m must have enough of a buffer?

If any of my ramblings make sense. I know what I'm trying to say, but it's hard to convey.

I could also be completely wrong 🤔

  • I think they stopped using that and now use RWGPS to calc AAA points.

There was an email at some point.

  • I lied, it was probably this post on YACF I was thinking of:

With the overwhelming dominance now of mandatory over advisory route DIY perms, we're slightly changing how AAA assessments are done to hopefully make everyone's lives easier:

Mandatory DIYs in Great Britain, switch to using the proposed route file submitted when entering, rather than the post-ride recorded track as per now. This aligns with how calendar events and 'traditional' perms are handled, means repeated/group rides always get the same points (and don't need to be re-assessed if the DIY org has a way of tracking these), and riders know what to expect as long as the track passes distance validation. On the list for a future update to the audax.uk is for members' dashboards to show the AAA points in the pending ride list, once this has been added by the organiser, and this should then carry over to the results automatically when validated. Also on the cards is moving the AAAnalyser over to AUK's servers and tighter integration with audax.uk, but for now please continue to use http://aukgis.frrt.org/ for assessing planned rides.

Mandatory DIYs overseas (outside of Ordnance Survey coverage, so includes Isle of Man and Northern Ireland), as above, but the route needs to be planned in either RideWithGPS or Openrunner (the ACP/LRM standard) and submitted with the ride. The climbing amount will be taken directly from the route planning site with AAA points derived from that, and thus I can retire my half-baked attempt to create a global AAAnalyser. This method should automatically compensate for any tunnels/bridges on the route which is the main issue with assessing ridden tracks that have these at the moment, along from inaccurate positions in poor GPS reception areas. Both of the above mapping tools allow you to 'sweep select' sections of the elevation profile to help locate partial AAA claims, but to make that easier I'll publish my formula for calculating the climbing thresholds for any distance.

Advisory DIYs remain as they are, with the ridden track being assessed if requested. For foreign rides, this does involve somewhat painstakingly inspecting the track for any spikes where the altitude is derived from the going over the top rather than through a tunnel so if these can be minimised that would be greatly appreciated!

I'm also in the process of updating the general AAA notes on audax.uk as I've realised that these are somewhat out of date and don't even reflect current practice.

  • Previously, even within those thresholds you could do the same ride, have a different elevation reading on your Garmin because atmospheric pressure or whatever and get more or less points.

  • Thanks, interesting!

As someone rightly pointed out, this is not about being pedantic, ie being constricted by but overcoming byzantine rules. I am enjoying (well type 2 enjoying based on Sunday) the chasing down of FWC points, I only want to work it out as it changes my approach to rides. With a full time job and kids and commuting putting another 2 or 3 2oos in the diary is not easy task! Although it may mean they can be much easier than that last one :)

  • When I was going for the AAA trophy I was pushing the limits. Sometimes it worked, sometimes not. Basing the points off the route rather than the track is a good idea. In my experience I'd win some and lose some but you're generally talking about a half point here and a half point there.
I do remember a 300k route that was supposed to be like 5 points but only got 3. That was a bit annoying but if you're riding in the mountains, there's often a discrepancy because you have a road but 5m away you have the side of a mountain so there's some jitter that can mess up elevation quite a bit.

  • With a full time job and kids and commuting putting another 2 or 3 2oos in the diary is not easy task!

    That it is not.

FWC, AAA and WSR were all contributory factors to my life's unravelling.
    A cautionary tale lol.

  • If you uncheck resample it uses whatever it finds in the file (which might be anything from junk to accurate barometric data) so for consistent AAA assessments have to leave that box checked & use the Ordnance Survey terrain data. One day I will get round to removing that option as is cause of some confusion.

  • Executive summary, run your planned (UK) route through the AAAnalyser before riding to check for points and that will be what you get.

  • Thanks, much appreciated! I will make sure the next one is suitably hilly :)

  • Got the trophies, thanks. I don't remember the last time I looked at AAA points.
Tile bagging instead of AAA hunting at least saves you a bit of homework. :D
