The Sky tactic worked in 2012 because it stopped anyone being able to attack Wiggins, allowing him to timetrial the peleton into submission (see filed under Indurain). In 2013 only Froome and Quintana had the strength to attack after the Sky card was played. In 2014, who knows?
Today they failed to isolate Valverde who already had the lead, only repeated attacks would have distanced him by enough to take a winning amount of time. Will Valverde manage a whole Tour without a bad day? Probably not.
