All-around bike?

Unless you are tall, then these demands spell out 26" mtb to me.

So, I have the equivalent of 750 GBP in my national currency, and for that I want to get a bike that I can use for touring/radonneuring, winter commuting, and preferably rambling about in the woods (cyclocross-ish).
