  • I forgot to say, when finishing a wheel you need to decide whether to favour making the rim perfectly true, or perfectly balancing the spoke tensions.
    With a wheel that uses a rim brake, especially a front wheel, I favour making the rim as straight as possible. These wheels will never see a brake so they don't need to be super true, so I will favour balancing the tension.

    You can get a rim super true and have pretty equal spoke tension. The wheel builder I work with uses a Fanatik bikes tension meter and spends a lot of time getting perfectly true wheels with equal spoke tensions all round. It does take longer than doing one or the other though.
