@sirbikealot and hugo7 - That does make practical sense and for a while I did consider that route. I had also considered Velocity A23s for a wider rim but I really wanted a spring classics inspired wheel set. Aside for practicalities, I want a wheel set I will love and I know I will get that with an Ambrosio to TB14 combo. TB14 are not the lightest rims but I can keep the weight down with my spoke/nipple choice and of course getting some titanium skewers. Btw thanks for the offer sirbikealot but my hearts not really in it.
@chadders81 - Exactly. I'm pretty sure I'll go with the Ultegra mech, but unless one comes up on the classifieds at a good price, I'll leave it until I've got a wheel set. With regards to keeping it clean, yes Its a pain but Its mostly used in the summer so It never gets too dirty.
I had previously mentioned that some paint chips had formed on areas of the frame. All the chips occurred at areas you'd expect - for example - on the bottom of bb, chainstays and the dropouts. A few days ago I got myself down to Superdrug and bought some white nail varnish. Luckily paint chips had only formed on the white areas of the frame so colour matching was simple.
I had mixed results as the photos below will illustrate, but most of the chips will be hidden in some way. Either way the visible ones will be less visually distracting and the varnish will hopefully stop the chips getting larger.
^ Chainstay
^ Annoyingly the most effective use of the varnish was on the bottom of the bb.
^ Dropout - Probably will be completely pointless as I'm sure it'll chip again...
The pic of the chainstays will probably garner responses telling me to add another coat but I'm cautious of doing this as I don't want a visible layer. I want it flush with the rest of the paintwork.
Anyway, next small jobs include filing the front dropout notches down...
... fitting the new gear mech hanger which will hopefully be here mid feb, and cleaning and fitting the front mech.
Other than that, heres a picture of it built up sans front mech.
Note: I don't run my seatpost that high but I will probably need a -17 degree stem to get the aggressive position I want for the crits.
