Well I managed to get most of it off just now, and interestingly enough not by using one of suggested methods. I simply used a scalpel, running it through the grooves of the seat post and this aggravated the dirt/stuff enough for it to be rubbed off.
Its still visible, but hardly. Sorry for the slightly shite photo.
