Lowering the tone somewhat, yesterday I bought an Alesis io4 having trawled teh internet for a few days looking at options on budget audio interface options.
Originally I was thinking irig hd/apogee jam or similar for demoing ideas on guitar with a view to getting something suitable for band recording somewhere down the line. In the end tho I just decided on the Alesis as it's cheap (£99) and has 4 xlr inputs so home recording and very basic rehearsal recordings are covered with this while I decide on something more upmarket if/when I need it.
My head really was spinning weighing up the audio interface options out there - the £/features/quality increases seem to go up in very small increments, if that makes any sense. I was all set to buy one of the entry-level Focusrite Scarletts, which seem very popular for home demoing, until I started seeing reports of them clipping quite readily with high output guitar pickups - a pretty big flaw imo seeing as they seem to be aimed largely at guitarists!
