• First time I've seen this thread so I'll chuck in my 2p.

    1) The poll should have a "don't care". IMO if a group of people with a common identity want to form an independent country and have the financial capacity to look after themselves then it's up to them. I have zero preference over whether Scotland actually stays or goes. However, I do think it's a really interesting issue, especially when you compare it to other places which are current in the media (Falklands, Gibraltar, Spain, etc.).

    2) I think it's especially interesting that any European region(s) still want(s) "independence" from whatever country they are a part of when we've all seeded so much power to Europe. It all seems like a bit of a fallacy and 9/10 I'd guess is predicated on perceived cultural differences.

    3) IMO success or failure will come down to the nitty-gritty details. I still haven't heard a pro-independence spokesperson address any of the specifics of how things will work. What currency will be used, how will fiscal policy be managed, how will all of the treaties be negotiated, will Scotland be allowed into the EU, etc. etc.... Everything seems to be a bit "oh it'll be fine, we can work all that out later."

Obviously I understand that politicians are reticent about putting forward details, in case people actually look at them and realise that they're either bollocks or point out counter arguments.

The last time I saw a poll result the English were coming down in favour of Scottish independence and the Scottish were against- has that now changed?

Ditto. On a very unscientific poll, my dad has a number of friends north of the border and their feeling is that, "Scots will go with their heads rather than their hearts". i.e. they'll vote to stay.
