I find I feel fresher after a long ride. Whether it's the vibrations from 23/25mm tyres or the extra concentration dodging, guiding and generally steering the small tyres on sketchy surfaces I don't know.
It's not dissimilar to the way a stiff alloy frame can beat you up over distance vs a carbon compact frame. Or a track bike on the road vs a fixed gear road bike.
