Good writeup, the grandson seems like a reasonable sort.
I'd still like a bit more clarification of what the cyclist did. A possible scenario seems to be that the cyclist was travelling perpendicular to the bus on a crossing road, and attempted to cross ahead when there wasn't enough space to get in front of the bus. So there might have been an RLJ incident, or at the least a failure to check before trying to cross.
