That sounds like a right ball-ache tbh. You need to leave a little extra room for any mud that sticks to the tyre too, or you'll wear away the paint on your frame in no time at all.
Also, the outermost knobbles are possibly the most important ones. Unless of course you don't intend on going around corners.......
