Good question, and I don't get the feeling they are being killed off either. The shops around my area are all still going and have been for many years. They may all be on brink of going bust but I wouldn't know that.
I think people (understandably on a bike forum) may just be under estimating the number of people who rely on bike shops to fix their bikes and have no interest in fixing them themselves
