• A few other types for you to consider that might go under the radar, most of which I've owned and all IMO are better than a Galaxy

    Revell Romany

    Claud Butler Regent
    FW Evans

Depends on how many gears you want to get on there tbh but cold setting the stays on an older frame shouldn't be a big deal if they are 126mm and you want 130 for 8/9/10 speed
If you are going with later kit then consider a Stronglight 80/100 double chainset, 86mm BCD you can have anything from a 52 to a 28 ring so you can have a super compact double there's also a 200LX which is a triple version. I still use an older variant and a later 80 on various machines, they're light, easy to find BB's for and you can still pick up the rings fairly cheap.

if you don't pick up a bike with a triple then Stronglight Impact triple is the one to pick £59 new from Spa cycles. I run a 50/36/26 on my Audax/tourer with 12-27.
If you decide to run STI's then you'll have a narrow choice on front derailleurs that will a) fit the older 28.6mm frame and b) work with a really small chainring and c/ actually work with STI's

Some links to bikes on ebay that might fit the bill
