I think the general idea is that Typhoon and the F-35 are expected to be the last manned fighter aircraft the MoD will buy. The future is unmanned (Copyright Duncan Sandys, 1957), and when the F-35 retires, 'RAF' will stand for Royal Aeromodelling Force.
