I have tapped the end of a shaft before, i think it was one of riks poles. It didnt go well, as soon as i screwed into it, the shaft split at the seem where it had been rolled and welded.
Saying that, i was chatting to some of the MKE guys and they had done it succesfully.
Nut and bolt is superior, imo.
