I found when I was running bmx cranks on one of my bikes that they felt fine for commuting etc.
Then I put Hollowtech 2s on and it felt like I'd geared down and several pounds off my bike (which I probably had actually but didn't think the weight diff would be som noticeable).
Also remember if you're riding fixed you'll need a splioned sprocket, the usual bmx style will work loose pretty quickly.
