I wouldn't call mine a trick bike, but there might be similarities re: commuting?
44/14 gearing (with 20" wheels) allows a comfortable 12-15 mph on the flat, and 20 mile+ runs aren't a problem. Mudguards have made a big difference to comfort and dignity in the last few weeks but 20 minutes with a spanner will see all the racks and guards removed if I am ever overcome by hooligan tendancies...
