• True, As Edmund King ‏@AAPresident tweeted
Interesting @FixedFun London Drive to Work Day 11th December. Will cost £10 Congestion Charge, £45 parking, £12 petrol
Hold on a second. That's not strictly a fair reflection.

The C charge is immutable but won't apply to everyone. Not everyone in London works within it and even for those who do, the best parking options might be just outside for many.

The petrol costs are going to vary a lot from that. At a measly 10mpg you would still have to drive 10 miles each way to get that cost. Quite a few cyclists don't travel that far to work. On top of that, just because you're driving to work, doesn't mean you have to waste fuel. Even in stop start London rush hour traffic, you don't have to waste fuel and drive inefficiently. Looks like Edmund isn't following the AA's own advice on driving economically.

Parking costs of £45? Really? I've no doubt that you could pay that much and a lot more. However, a quick check on parkopedia.co.uk for my old work area suggests that for 10 hours of parking I would be paying between £18 and £35 and the most common cost is around £25.

If I were to take my old commute of Nunhead to Westminster I would expect to pay around £40. I may have to move the car at lunchtime but that isn't uncommon practice for car commuters. A strategically booked minicab could be done for £30.

Even on my meagre salary (which would be more in London) I would happily pay that amount of money to make a point if I felt that there would be enough other people prepared to do the same. Leave at the right time and you'll be at the head of the wave and not suffer too much in congestion but still cause knock on effect for those driving in a bit later.
