maybe but having done l'eroica a few times now i reckon smaller gears are the keys to enjoying the day out of lots of miles and lots of eating/drinking - specially on an older possibly more temperamental bicycle - every year i go the more people reduce their gearing so they can enjoy the day more and no-one enjoys walking up Monte St. Marie!
