The problem with segments is that it requires a level of common sence to know when enough is enough, or even if a segment should exist in that place anyway. When I'm in London Strava segments don't even cross my mind.
Even in the country the idea of downhill segments seems silly when some of the descents are single lanes with no way out if you happen to come across other road users. But I can only give it praise when it comes to proper climbs, I'm proud of my KOMs where there's a sensible gradient and the ability to see how your times change over time is great and definately helps give Strava an edge.
