48/19 works for me, but i preferred 49/20 before i changed cranks
i am old, overweight and have fucked knees, so a spinny gear is preferred, but it hurt going up whitedown last friday (which is allegedly 19.1% http://roadsofstone.com/2010/07/01/223-cycling-on-surrey-and-sussex-hills-from-white-down-to-ditchling-beacon/)
can still spin down hills at 36mph so it seems to cover all the bases
