48:16 = 81 gear inches on an SS. I find it perfect for London commuting and am going to attempt London-Brighton on it in May. I feel I might be pushing it up a hill or two.
It won't be too bad if you go early as you avoid the vast majority of the numpties, if your strong you will make it up most of the hills as they aren't too bad. Ditching is tough but not as tough as people make out, the problem with ditching is that its a bottleneck and 80% of the people that try and tackle it aren't fit or strong enough to make it so you end up hitting walls of people getting off. I got two thirds of the way up and hit a wall of people standing in the way, I couldn't get going again.
