  • The comment was a tongue in cheek one aimed a people who know of my omnivore status

The assumption that I would not respect the nature of a vegetarian or vegan forum food get together is somewhat misplaced.

There wasnt anything in that original post to convey some sort of tongue in cheek remark. Just that you might want to eat meat. Not everyone on this forum or thread knows each other.

The subsequent response from LAW stating "he'll eat what he likes" sounded to me like the exact sort of hostility / defence of "freedom to eat whatever I want" I've sadly / inevitably come to expect as a vegan from meat eaters with a bone to pick. Didnt exactly fill me with confidence.

To be accused of being hostile, for asking a complete stranger to ask their meat eating partner to abide by the rest of the group, is unfair, including the "we're out" statement - making us out to be arseholes who would have forced you out - when from what I gather, all people want is to have a vegetarian get together, free from the usual bullshit we have to put up with other 99% of the time when eating out, and asking for some clarification on a meat eater "who'll eat what he likes" coming along. It was hardly the Spanish Inquisition.

You wouldnt tell people organising an NA meeting you're bringing someone possibly with a big bag of gear in their pocket; or to a Muslim get together that you're going to bring a friend who might just want to get pissed at the table. OK they're just two things that popped into my head as an example and they're not ideal, but I hope you get my point.

If some of our remarks did come across as defensive and / or hostile - could you blame us? The endless amount of shit we have to put up with, the absolute unstoppable tide of animal flesh and products being visible and pushed at us at every turn of our lives; and then when a space is created to escape that all-encompassing horrible day to day reality just for an evening with like minded folk (also with another passion of cycling in common), to have that potentially encroached on, mirroring every single other eating out occasion that we have to grin and bear, would be pretty annoying.
