Might be able to make this, depending which date - will check with Aroogah, he's got a hankering for Mexican food at the moment. Can't guarantee he'll stick with the veggie/vegan menu though.
I call not sitting beside him then!
It would be great to have Chris along, but why get his better other half to 'guarantee' this for him? :) I think I can speak for all when I say that it would be hugely appreciated if he sampled the veggie menu on this occasion. I'm not very uptight about that sort of thing, but the theme of the evening is 'veggie/vegan nosh-up', and it would slightly defeat the purpose?
Flippin' 'eck. Chill chaps. He eats veggie every day with me by choice, he can eat what he likes.
After thinking about this overnight, I'm in complete agreement with this. Every single other meal I go to with friends or partner's friends I say nothing about people eating meat - and dont go off on a mad preach even when I get asked about veganism.
If its a vegetarian get together it would be good for a change not to see someone at the table eating something which the rest of the party is pretty much opposed to. And that they understood that before they came.
And ^ its not intended to offend anyone either - but it is a vegetarian get together.
Little bit insensitive though, given how many vegetarians have to endure meat-eaters going on and on about how meat is murder and murder is delicious at every fucking gathering we attend, no? Would be nice not to have to deal with it for once. Up to you tho kids.
Ed, while some of the vegetarians may be in it purely for health reasons, others have chosen their diet according to personal morality (which covers all the vegans, by definition). While they will mostly keep their own counsel when eating with carnivores, at a specifically vegetarian meal they should be able to expect not to have to do that.
I occasionally eat meat, but I'd see it as very inconsiderate, if not plain rude, to do that at the vegetarian nosh-up.
Perhaps I am just in a bad mood, but if you are going to get offended that people at a veggie gathering would want you to eat vegetarian, you may have some issues to work out.
I don't think Julia got offended as such, and certainly not offended at the request to eat veggie, but was rather made sad at the lack of welcoming that the reaction implied, especially as Chris isn't exactly a rabid meat-eater. At least, that's how I read her. I think something like this can stop being about the issue very quickly and feel purely personal. I can understand her feeling.
Thanks for the vote of confidence. The comment was a tongue in cheek one aimed a people who know of my omnivore status, my profound Texas roots, and my constant griping about the lack of decent Mexican food in this city (the current burrito-availability explosion not withstanding). There's some assumed knowledge there that may be missing from the overall context.
I'm madly in love with and engaged to a vegetarian who is carrying my child. I respect her choices and fully support them. It is been, for me, a food revelation over the last couple of years learning to expand my culinary repertoire cooking with Longandwinding. The assumption that I would not respect the nature of a vegetarian or vegan forum food get together is somewhat misplaced.
So when the fuck are we eating some Mexican food? List?
