Took out a 3 years old worn as fuck chain on the table and put a new one next to do, line up perfectly, counted the link it's exactly the same length.
it's just the washer that got smaller as it get worn.
`
FTFY.
Plus, never done it on a table but usually when fitting a new chain I hold the new and old one up beside each other so I can see what length to split the new one at and almost everytime you can look down the chains and see the links getting out of line. Not by much at the top but as you look further down the effect is multiplied. This is because the pins have worn and the part of the inner link that pivots around the pin too. It's not stretched but it's gotten longer.
