Other than deep gully's, I have found the iPhone to be within a meter accurate. It falls down on vector plotting so I only use it as a device to tell me where I am on the map and use the on screen map to walk by.
I also use a small Aquapac (about £10-20 from blacks) as a waterproof case, sold as ordinary mobile not iPhone specific. Screen still works inside the case and the phone dangles on a cord round your neck for that gadget rambler geek look (that and the large free loader solar panel on top of your backpack).
Thing with the etrex is you need the 20 not the 10 for OS mapping, you need quality mapping to safely change your route mid walk. The 20 with maps is quite pricey.
