Going back to the whole alu failure in frames.
When I worked at cyclescurgery, we used to see a cheap marin hybrid once every week or so. Normally ridden into the shop with complaints about noises while riding. On one occasion the seat tube was completely sheared off.. makes me wonder a) how it was ridden and b) how the rider didn't notice.
The best was a story I heard about a very expensive Marin aluminium/scandium hard tail mountainbike, which developed a vertical crack down the HEAD TUBE. I'd have loved/hated to have been the shop assistant deal with that.
