I've never used a Garmin, I suspect I'd get detrimentally pre-occupied with it...
What's worked well on unfamiliar routes is when I've worked out the route and got it printed out just like Fox's, that goes in my pocket, my cycling partner has a cateye with mileage, so we know about when to look out for that turning. But no computers on my bike, it's just better that way.
Taking an unplanned detour does confuse things rather, though.
