All this talk of satellites zooming around space has derailed the thread, but the scenario you sketch Pete of getting out the scissors and sticky-backed plastic to plot a route seems in keeping with the ethos of cycling. Something about that level of crude devotion suits the egalitarian nature of riding a bike. It's appropriate. But surely a pain in the ass. Or, you may get enjoyment out of the project of putting the route painstakingly together, and the skills it takes, much like an OCD person such as myself does in the end results I read back come the end of a ride, data wise. So we're back where we started. Much like a ride.
I've already got too many frequencies buzzing in my brain; more through gps would probably send it all haywire, but that appeals to me too.
