The statistics and measurement against other riders are seperate issues. I was rallying against the idea that 'I don't have a Garmin therefore I cannot ride 60 miles by myself.'
Although the statistics bother me too. I've been reeled in by such things before, which is why I'm keen to avoid all the issues you raise above. Of course, if cycling is all about shaving minutes/seconds off your pbs, constantly improving your performance, and crushing your peers, then that information will be very useful.
But I don't need £150 worth of Garmin to know that I have improved over the last two years; I know that from my ability to recover and by looking at the clock before and after I leave the house.
