I commuted via Kings Cross for years until recently (after that SE Asian girl was killed by a lorry). I just don't recommend it, even if it adds time using a different route. I now ride south of Kings Cross via Russell Square which is much safer.
The eastwards approach past Kings Cross Station is a death trap due to the fact that the number of lanes increases as you pass the traffic lights which inevitably means that vehicles move in either direction. I've been stuck between a bus moving right, at the same time as a car moving right on that stretch. Nightmarish, and not worth it in my opinion.
