When you say commuting, I think of an on-one Pomp. Racks, mudguards, etc. Plus you'd save enough to get a set of carbon cd forks and a nice carbon seatpost to bring the weight down.
As smallfurry said the singular is nice. Sooooo versatile (just saw a wicked fully geared one pass me) altho I'd guess they're on the tubby side, especially with discs. Plus they require a sense of taste to build nicely.
When you tried riding the steamroller, did you notice the weight?
Or why not get a langster and upgrade it? It's alu.
Or get a secondhand condor pista and use race blades and a bag?
Or get one of those PX uber light aul road frame if theyre still around and pay for the dropouts to be modified (this could also be done with any decent 2nd hand frame)?
