try the "secret hotel" deals on last minute.com or elsewhere - my mum did and got a good room in a hotel behind the tate modern (perfect for her as near where I work).
You can get great 4 or 5* hotels reduced, and you can normally figure out which hotel it is or pin it down to about 3 just by googling the blurb they put up about it.
The most central premier inns you've suggested are probably the one above A3200 (that's basically waterloo) and the one by A4 (bang in the west end). Both are walking distance from buckingham palace, westminster (10 - 15 mins each) (and st paul's - c. 30 mins)...
