Shielding/cushioning = space protection at slow speed.
Checking = space protection at fast speeds (so an attacker is still able to meet a player safely and predictably).
Without the latter one can simply charge up the wings at break-neck speed and the opposition won't have any way of meeting/challenging that player, no?
Checking a stationary player is often reckless/overly aggressive if you're seeing that as normal "checking"?
