It sounds like you're advocating moving towards no contact which I think would be an equally bad thing.
You cannot predict or "do it back" when someone is shoving you off your bike from behind, you have no ability to lean into it when it's blind side and it'll take you off your bike (especially at speed), I'll show you tonight at polo if you like.
