I broke my ankle when I was 18 (6/7 years ago now) someone jumped on me to give me a hug and floored me taking my ankle out in the process. I had a really nasty Tib/fib Potts fracture and had to have an ORIF (open reduction internal fixation) operation. I had 9 pins and a metal plate and was on crutches for 6 months. I'm just a casual cyclist but I ride fixed with spds and rotating to unclip has made my ankle stronger rather than bein the problem I'd thought it would be. I get the cold aches with the metal in my ankle and running feels strange still but cycling is absolutely fine. I was treated in Lincoln hospital (avoid) and never received proper physio, make sure you get proper physio and you'll get much better movement and strength back, obviously...
