I was thinking of road use, the only thing I've heard on the track is the use of wider rear tyres to get the benefit of low rolling resistance and more grip for sprinters. Switching from a 22mm to a 24mm tubular on the back makes no real difference to stability, although it would let you go a bit further into the turns in a stand, so there could be a tactical advantage.
