There's quite a lots of modern bicycle that have alu part and still do fine, the key really is to be sure that you can replace this and that with alternative component in 3rd world country, such as 26" rims of which is fairly common.
Hell, some actually went round the world on an alu frame even, however I draw the line at the frame being alu though, as my tour may last for about 4 months and rather have it to be steel.
