Tributes were paid today to a young woman cyclist who died after being hit by a lorry. Student Paula Jurek, 20, was crushed by an articulated truck turning left in front of her in Camden Town. The tributes came as cycling campaigners said accidents involving lorries on London's roads are rising. Miss Jurek, originally from Poland but living in South Tottenham, was studying tourism at London Metropolitan University in Holloway. She had lived in Britain for just a year before her death and was learning French at evening classes. The accident happened at 3.20pm last Tuesday near the junction of Camden Road and St Pancras Way. Paramedics tried for 40 minutes to save Miss Jurek but she was pronounced dead at the scene.
*Her friend, Paul Dean, 31, said: "She was an extremely kind and friendly person. She had a great deal of time for others and listened to people without ever being quick to get angry or be judgmental. * "We need more people like Paula in this world." A post mortem gave the cause of death as multiple injuries. The lorry driver, a 65-year-old man, was arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless driving. He has been released on bail. Police said the lorry was turning left into St Pancras Way when it collided with the cyclist, who was on its nearside.

I think I read somewhere more cyclists have been killed by lorries so far this year than soldiers have died in Afghanistan.
