So I'm going to be riding solo through the wilds of sweeden for a measly 10 days at the beginning of may, and I'm pretty set - despite never having done it before and not really having a clue. The problem I am stuck with is racks.
I haven't got shit loads of cash, and I dunna wanna fork out for really nice tubus racks for a single 10 day ride incase I hate it and never wanna do touring again. And I have a crappy Halfords rack already. But I'll be alone away from civilization for 10 days, so I have kegs of gear and can't really afford for a rack to brake. Similarly I need to try and keep the weight down so I don't get raped by ryanair. The other problem is I have a disc on the front, which makes fitting lowriders a pain in the bum 'ole.
In terms of what I will be riding:
**
Bike:**
Surly Cross Check Frame
Kona P2 Fork (disc and V mounts)
Front Mechanical Disk
Rear Paul / Avid (depending on clearence) canti.
One one midge bars with STIs.
Other stuff
**Panniers / bags:
**2 Medium Ortlieb Roll top front panniers
2 Large Ortlieb Roll top rear panniers
Unkown handlebar bag
Home made truck tarp stuff-it sack
Kit:
Less than I will undoubtedly need and more than I can fit.
**Terrain / Route:
**Mostly roads / paths / fireroads etc.. Some light off roading, but very little.
Some small villages but no bike shops / welders or shit like that in all likely hood.
10 nights in a tent.
No company.
Weather likely to be warm and good; rain and wind unkown.
I'd appreciate advise on what kind of racks to go for. I know I should go steal, but can I justify the dosh? If I were to go for Tubus what product to go for? Whats going to be compatible with the annoying front disk?
Its worth noting I have trade accounts with all the big boys and tubus, but none of the other onbscure handmade things, this will rule some brands out and others in - no point paying RRP when I can have another brand at trade - right? Partciularly looking for advise from seasoned tourers etc...
